Over the past few years, average GRE scores for the total group of test-takers have been reported at approximately 150 verbal, 153 quantitative, and 3.5 analytical writing. The GRE is administered more than 600,000 times per year, creating a large sample space for test-taker percentiles. A verbal score of 160 is in the 86th percentile, and a verbal score of 165 is in the 96th percentile. A larger number of students receive these scores on the quantitative section of the GRE, and quantitative scores of 160 and 165 are in the 76th and 89th percentiles respectively. Selective graduate programs usually expect their applicants to achieve scores of 160 or higher on whichever section of the test is more relevant to a degree program, and in some cases, departmental averages can be 165 or even higher. Students taking the GRE should begin their preparation by calculating target scores based on the reported statistics of their preferred graduate programs. Exceeding these averages will produce the most favorable odds of acceptance.
